Why Older Homes Across Northern Philadelphia Keep Outgrowing Their Electrical Panels

Signs Your Home Needs a Panel Upgrade, and What It Costs in Philadelphia

Most of the panel problems we run into around here start the same way, and it usually has nothing to do with electricity. A homeowner in Roxborough or Mount Airy calls about a new air conditioner or a heat pump. Someone comes out to size the system, opens the panel, and finds a main service that was never built to carry what the house is being asked to do now. That is not a rare surprise. In a lot of Northern Philadelphia neighborhoods, it is the norm.

Our owner, John Summers, and our master electrician, David Cruz, recently walked through the real warning signs for the Electrical Association of Philadelphia in Signs You Need an Electrical Panel Upgrade. If you want the short technical version, that is a good read. This is the local one, written for the homes we actually work in.

The housing here is old, and the wiring shows it

Philadelphia has some of the oldest housing stock in the country, and the northern and northwest sections are full of it. Stone twins in Glenside. Rowhomes in Germantown. Postwar singles in Abington and Jenkintown that have been added onto twice. A panel that was fine in 1975 was sized for a stove, a fridge, a furnace fan, and a couple of televisions. It was not sized for a modern kitchen, a home office, window units in every bedroom, and a car charging in the driveway. We see this across Philadelphia and the surrounding areas every week.

That gap between what the house was built for and what you plug into it today is the whole story.

The signs worth checking at the panel itself

You do not need a meter to catch most of these. Open the panel cover and look:

None of that is cosmetic. A panel doing any of these is either straining to keep up or has already crossed into a safety problem. Rust and water next to live electrical connections is exactly the combination you do not want sitting in a basement.

The all-electric squeeze

Here is where we see the most trouble, and it is a newer problem. Homeowners are moving off gas on purpose. The stove goes electric, then the dryer, then the water heater. Then a space heater or two for the back room. Then a charger in the driveway, and maybe a hot tub on the deck. Each of those is reasonable on its own. Stacked onto a 100-amp panel that had no spare room to begin with, they are too much.

That is the mistake we correct most often. Not a broken panel. A panel being asked to carry a 2026 house on a 1970s service. Depending on how much you are adding, most of those homes need to move up to a larger main service to handle the load safely. If going all-electric, adding a charger, or any other big addition is even on your list for the next few years, size the panel for where the house is headed, not where it sits today.

What an upgrade actually costs in Philadelphia

Straight numbers, because guessing helps no one. Every panel replacement in the city requires permits and inspection, and these figures include both:

For a home planning to add real load, the 200-amp service is usually the better spend, because paying to upsize once beats paying to upsize twice. We also keep a standing offer on this exact work: $75 off 100 or 200 amp service installation.

When it can wait, and when it cannot

Honest answer from the people who do this every day: panel and circuit warning signs are not the kind of thing to sit on. Water, rust, and repeat trips do not fix themselves, and they get more expensive the longer they wait. If you are not sure where your home stands, the useful next step is a full electrical evaluation of the house, not a patch on the one symptom you happened to notice. A single tripping breaker is often a clue about the whole system, not a standalone problem.

Have your panel looked at before it becomes an emergency

If your panel is showing any of the signs above, or you are planning the kind of upgrades that push a service to its limit, our electricians can take a look and tell you straight what you need. Give us a call at 215-482-8800, or reach out through our contact page. You can see the full range of what we handle on our electrical services page, and if the wiring behind the panel is as old as the panel itself, whole home rewiring is worth asking about too.
